Stoke Golding
A
disappointing start to the pre-season campaign saw us lose out to
Barwell.
In the first half we started slowly and struggled to find our normal
passing game. As a result, we found ourselves 2-0 down at the
break. However, the bright spots of the first half were some fine
saves by Jack Smith in goal.
The
second half was a lot better, as we worked harder and stopped our
opponents from playing. We scored with 10 minutes to go when good work
down the right hand side saw Harley Fox fire a cross-shot into the
bottom corner . Unfortunately, we could not find a equaliser in the
dying minutes.
Unlucky this time lads but keep your chins up!

What a tremendous response
from the lads after last weeks defeat!
From the kick off, Stoke Golding pressurised the opponents limiting them
to only a few chances. As the game progressed we grew
stronger and played with confidence, the defence standing firm the and
the chances coming thick and fast.
In the 30th minute Cameron
Wilkes picked a loose ball up in the box and showed great composure to
go round the keeper and slot it into a empty net. Within minutes
it was 2-0, after a great save by Jack Smith who then launched the ball
forward and, after one bounce, put Jack Bonell through on goal.
Jack coolly finished into the bottom corner.
With a few minutes remaining
Hilmorton pulled one back but it was too little too late for the
opposition.
Well done lads, great result,

Overall the first half was
pretty even with both sides having chances. However, after 10
minutes the Studs made it 1-0 and within a couple more minutes it was
2-0. All credit to the lads, they kept working hard and, after 15
minutes great work by Danny Houghton, he skipped passed two challenges
to rifle the ball into the top corner. 2-1 soon became 2-2 as Jack
Bonell went though and slotted into the bottom corner.
In the second half the lads
kept on working hard, trying to create chances but could not find a way
though. With the score at 5-2 Jack Bonell pulled a goal
back smashing the ball home from close range. With seconds remaining the
Studs got a lucky own goal.
So, not the result we were
looking to start the season off with, but plenty of positives to take
from the match. Unlucky lads keep your chins up!

Syston Town Hawks 4
v 1 Stoke Golding Swords
The second game of the league
campaign provided another stiff test for the boys, playing in very
blustery conditions. Syston were 1 nil up after 5 mins, the
rebound from a fine save from Jack Smith unfortunately hit the hand of a
Stoke player and the resulting penalty was scored. This spurred the
boys on, their passing game very nearly providing the equaliser with
Henry Wormleighton firing just wide from a free kick and some unlucky
bounces of the ball following corners. With 10 minutes gone Syston went
2 ahead from a corner. Syston then scored their 3rd after another 15
mins, after breaking through the middle and shooting. The goal was
slotted home after another great save from Jack Smith.
A rallying half time team talk from
Jamie & Steve gave the boys a much needed lift and it showed through
their 2nd half performance. Playing against the wind and having to
defend for long periods the back pair of Cam Wilkes and Ben Thomas stood
firm showing excellent defensive qualities and Jack Smith saved anything
that came his way. With 5 mins to go, the hard work and efforts from
all the boys came good. A free kick gave Henry Wormleighton another
chance to shoot, this time he made no mistake as he rifled the ball into
the top corner. A definite contender for goal of the season already!
As Stoke pressed again a Syston long
ball down the pitch took an unfortunate bounce that struck our keeper
and rolled into the net to seal their 4-1 victory.
So, not the result we wanted but a
massive well done for battling hard in the 2nd half. Keep the hard
work going boys and results will come!!

What a great result from the
lads!
From the start we passed the
ball about with ease and created chances . With Ben and Henry bossing
the back line and the midfield working hard it was only a matter of time
before Stoke Golding took the lead. Then in the 14th minute a shot
from Danny was only parried away and Jack Bonell was on hand to slot the
ball home .
1-0 soon became 2-0 as Ben
Thomas picked the ball up from the back and skipped passed three
players, before rifling into the back of the net . Straight from the KO
we won the ball back with Ben running the length of the pitch before
burying the ball, this time, into the corner of the net. As the
game went on both teams had unfinished chances but, at 30 minutes, Jack
Bonell broke free and slotted passed the keeper . Glenfield
managed to pull three goals back as the second half wore on.

From the start we struggled to
keep hold of the ball and after five minutes, following a great save by
Jack Smith, the ball fell to their forward who tapped into a empty Stoke
Golding net . Danny Houghton had a header go over the bar and Jack
Bonell had a shot escape just wide. Unfortunately at half time we
found ourselves 4 - 0 down.
In the second half we kept
trying to find a way through the Birstall defence. With the score
now at 5 - 0 a goal kick by Jack Smith found Cameron Wilkes on the right
who showed great control and put the ball though for Jack Bonell to
score. To our disappointment we could not build on this goal and
unfortunately conceded three more ourselves late on in the match .

Stoke Golding 1 v
5 Lutterworth Athletic Blizzard
Another
unfortunate loss for the boys this weekend but a game not without many
positives. After an even opening we found ourselves behind after 5 mins
when the ball in from a corner somehow managed to squeeze itself into
the goal between 3 Stoke players. With 10 mins gone it was 2 - 0 after a
break down the right ended with a low drive into the corner giving
keeper Jack Smith no chance. Again the boys showed their battling
qualities and tried to get themselves back into the game with Jack
Bonnell very unfortunate on a couple of occasions. Then on the stroke of
half time the hard work paid off with what is becoming a "Trademark" of
Henry Wormleighton, he drilled yet another free kick into the top corner
giving the Lutterworth keeper no chance.
The 2nd
half started with what can only be described as unbelievable; a stray
dog ran onto the pitch and as most of the players stopped one of the
Lutterworth players placed the ball into the back of the net, that was
3-1! Lutterworth continued to press and if it wasn’t for numerous
outstanding saves from Jack Smith and tremendous defending from Matty
Setchell and Ben Thomas the game would have been over. 4 – 1 did
arrive after a break through the middle left our Keeper one on one but
the Lutterworth player made no mistake. With minutes remaining it
became 5-1 when a speculative kick managed to loop just out of our
keepers reach.
All of
the hard work that the boys are putting into training is starting to pay
dividends; it will only be a matter of time before we get that win!!
The
lads can hold their heads up high though, sometimes you get that lucky
bounce, sometimes it bounces the right way and sometimes dogs don’t run
on the pitch!!!

Epworth Forest 3 v
0 Stoke Golding
Following on from last weeks
improvements the boys yet again showed how all their hard work and
determination is starting to shine through, the scoreline this week
doesn't read as though it's the case but yet again this team is just
plain unlucky at the minute. Right from the start Stoke were the only
team that looked like scoring with the hard working midfield of Henry
Wormleighton, Cam Wilkes and Danny Houghton bossing the play and the
ever running Jack Bonell creating havoc amongst the Epworth defence.
Add to the mix the consistant defending of Ben Thomas and Matty Setchell
and the box commanding Jack Smith then it was no surprise that Epworth
were kept out in the first half.
After numerous slick passing moves
and great link up play the only thing that stopped Stoke scoring in the
first half were unlucky breaks, unlucky bounces and last gap tackles,
most of which seem to happen when the luckless Jack Bonell had chances -
don't worry Jack your time will come !! :o)
The second half started in the same
vein with Stoke dictating the play, chances were going the wrong side of
the post and anything that looked to have us in danger was easily
defended by Ben Thomas, Matty Setchell and the safe hands of Jack
Smith. Then as what seems to be the norm, a break from a throw in left
the Epworth player on his own just outside the box and he made no
mistake to make it 1-0 with about 7 minutes remaining. Pushing the boys
on and changing the formation to try and get back into the game looked
to be working but again a fortunate goal made it 2-0, this time another
cross managed to find the top corner giving our keeper no chance. To
cap it all off on the stroke of full time a corner managed to bounce off
one of the Stoke defenders to make it 3-0.
Again boys, as we have said to you,
keep your heads up, there was nothing wrong with the display, your hard
work, determination or attitude. Your time will come and you will get a
very deserved win

Saffron Dynamo 3 v
2 Stoke Golding
A tough
away trip to the unbeaten league leaders was always going to provide a
test for the boys but this week they really came into their own. For
the 1st
25 minutes of this game any neutral watching would have said that Stoke
were top of the table. From the kick off the lads started with all
of the pace, passing, moving and determination that we as
parents/coaches knew they could do. With the midfield of Harley Fox,
Danny Houghton and Henry Wormleighton busy in the tackle, quick on the
break and striker Jack Bonell again leading the line superbly, it was
only a matter of time before Stoke went ahead.
From a
corner taken by Harley Fox the ball broke back to him and his pinpoint
cross was coolly slotted home by Danny Houghton. A minute later it was
2-0, this time a fast passing break ended up at the feet of Danny
Houghton who again made no mistake placing the ball into the bottom
corner. Chances kept coming but the unlucky times we’ve been having
recently played reared its ugly head as balls bounced off players, the
wrong side of posts and just not in the goal.
Saffron
did try to play their way back into the game however, with Ben Thomas
and Matty Setchell as commanding as ever in defence Saffron were left to
shoot from long range and when they did get through Jack Smith in goal
was again on top of his game.
So,
what happened in the 2nd
half......................... ?
In
short the boys came out flying again looking for more goals, pushed high
up the pitch and unfortunately got caught out. 2 goals in 2 minutes
made it level and with the lads still pushing for goals and tiring fast
they conceded another. Given that how Saffron came out winners could
be described as heartbreaking but this is definitely not the case.
This
was a game against the unbeaten league leaders who don’t yet don’t know
how to lose, this was a game where all the lads gave their all, did
exactly what was asked of them, passed, moved, tackled, ran their socks
off, listened, defended and gave everything for each other and just came
up short.
Proud
is a word not often used but on this occasion proud is the best fitting
word to describe how all the coaches and parents watching felt about
each and everyone of you !
A
massive well done, keeps smiling and if you play like that for the rest
of the season you will win more than you lose !

5 Netherhall
With
very blustery conditions and playing against a team unbeaten so far this
season, it was always going to be a tough task for the lads, but again,
result aside, they showed in this performance they can live and compete
in this league.
A
little bit of tinkering with the formation by Jamie & Steve giving the
midfield of Danny Houghton and Henry Wormleighton more freedom to
showcase themselves worked well.
SGFC
from the kick off were the better organized of the two teams, they out
fought, out passed and looked like the team that would score first.
Then, against the run of play and with their first corner, Netherall
scored. A goal summed up by one of the travelling supporters to me as
“not deserved”.
The
boys came back into the game and got their deserved equaliser after a
corner whipped in by Henry Wormleighton went straight in at the near
post. Both sides then settled down and started to play well, with
chances at both ends. Jack Smith in goal was again in fine form, Cam
Wilkes, Matty Setchall and Ben Thomas looked comfortable in defence and
Jack Bonell, who is fast becoming a candidate for the new energizer
bunny, yet again ran the line up front excellently.
Early
in the second half the lads were 2-1 down and in the space of five
minutes it was 4 – 1, an unfortunate drop in concentration and not doing
the basics that they have done so well in recent weeks was the
downfall. The boys didn’t let their heads drop and finally Jack Bonell
got the goal that he has deserved for his outstanding effort this
season, coolly finishing after beating a couple of players – Jack I told
you it would come !
A fifth
goal late on in the game sealed Netherall's win.
Even
after a 5-2 losing result, the boys were not disgraced and they were
not really outplayed. They switched off for five minutes and when you
switch off it normally comes back and haunts you, this however is part
if learning so there’s no blaming of the boys.
From my
side of the pitch hearing the opposition worry about how we worked and
fought harder only goes to show you boys are doing the right things.
Netherall should be top of league and for at least half an hour they
were scared of you!!
Keep it
going !

4 Studs Warriors
Today’s game saw us at the half way point of the season and the 1st
return fixture, starting with the same new formation as the previous
week the boys started slowly and found themselves under pressure. The
visitors’ passing was proving the difference for the first 12 mins
giving them a 2-0 advantage before Stoke woke up!
Then a
goal to grace any field at U9 level, Jack Bonell picked the ball up on
the right hand side, showed pace and power to evade his markers and
drilled his shot into the top left hand corner. A great strike and one
richly deserved with all the effort Jack has put in this season. 2-1 and
back in the game before a late Studs strike on the stroke of half time
gave the visitors the upper hand at the break.
A
reshuffle of the pack at half time and a few words of encouragement sent
the boys out positive for the 2nd half and the lads didn’t
disappoint, they were quickly on the front foot, quicker in the tackle,
stronger on the ball and their passing game was evident. Stoke were
soon back in the game after a long kick from Goalkeeper Jack Smith
enabled Jack Bonell to run through to slot home, 3-2, the game opened up
with both sides going all out for goals, it was end to end with last
ditch tackles, corners at both ends and chances dropping to both sides
but to no avail.
If not
for a some great defending by Matty Setchall and Ben Thomas along with
another wonder save from Jack Smith then Studs would have been out of
sight. Then, with 5 mins to go, Studs got the goal to effectively end
the game , that was 4-2 but the lads kept going and in the dying seconds
a corner from Henry Wormleighton was headed powerfully home by Ben
Thomas.
So,
again plenty of positives to take from the 2nd half, the
passing, the determination, the work rate and we won the half 2-1.
Maybe
we should start playing games at 12pm to give you all a chance to wake
up !!

So with
the Christmas break over, one training session and the boys all full of
turkey and selection boxes, it was back to the grind stone with a trip
away to a team that has only been beaten once and a team that beat us
8-1 in the first fixture. We as parents, coaches and players would be
forgiven to fear the worst, however, again the boys proved those fears
to be wrong.
The
first half was all Stoke, Danny, Jack H, Henry and Jack B were tenacious
in the tackle, crisp with their passing and the movement of all four was
excellent. With the commanding Ben and Matty in defence, Birstall were
limited to a handful of shots which were comfortably dealt with by Jack
in goal when the two defenders were beaten.
The
boys did everything in the first half except score, plenty of possession
and lots of corners but the goal they so deserved just eluded them. Ben
T came the closest with a strike from twenty yards that rattled to post
and fell away to safety. It was goalless at the break.
The
boys started a little slower in the 2nd half and found
themselves one down after the opening three minutes when a good break
down the right ended with a cross into the Stoke box and good finish by
the Birstall player. The boys did not get their heads down and
continued to press, if sometimes a little too much and forgetting their
positions but that shows their will to score goals and win.
After
the goal most of the 2nd half was an even game, both teams
tried to press and all the hard work that they had put in meant that
they had started to cancel each other out. Then from a corner in the
last minute, Birstall sealed the win, the cross sailed past three Stoke
players and was scored at the far post.
A
fantastic effort from the lads and a performance they can take a lot of
heart from, even the Birstall manager commented that it was the hardest
game they have had in a long time. From my perspective the 1st
half performance was the best I’ve seen the boys play this season and
I’m sure that if they keep that in mind they will find that elusive
league win very soon.

Stoke Golding 3 v
5 Epworth Forest
A game
of two halves is the only way to describe our latest outing! With
the wind at nearly gale force Stoke started the game with the wind at
their backs and were quickly in the driving seat. Early pressure paid
dividends and after ten minutes the boys were in front after some great
passing between Jack Hall and Jack Bonnell. This ended with Bonell
coolly slotting the ball home.
More
attacking play from the lads continued with Henry Wormleighton , Jack
Hall & Jack Bonell all going close, then on fifteen minutes Epworth
grabbed an equalizer. A break down the middle was well finished by the
Epworth player.
1-1
quickly became 2-1 to Stoke after a long kick from Jack Smith found Jack
Bonell on the left and with a great turn he arrowed his shot into the
bottom corner from 15 yards. With the wind literally in our sails we
were 3-1 up after a cross on the right by Henry found its way in at the
near post, the luck that we have not seen this season!
So, 3-1
up at half time and after some informative instructions from Jamie &
Steve it was our turn to play uphill against the wind. It was always
going to be a hard half for us and two minutes in Epworth had scored to
make it 3-2 but again the lads didn’t let their heads go down. If not
for the cross bar and a great save to deny Danny H, then it would have
been 5-2. It wasn’t and after a further 10 mins we found ourselves 4-3
behind after scrambles in the area and wind assisted break-aways.
4-3
became 5-3 just before the end which put pay to any hope of getting back
into the game.
As I
said a game of two halves but a game where we can take some learning
into training and better ourselves. It was difficult conditions and
sticking to the game plan is part of learning for the boys and I’m sure
they will benefit from the experience.

Golding
Stoke Golding U18's opened their
Premier League account with a solid away victory at Markfield. Stoke
came into this game off the back of a poor performance last week and,
with only a makeshift team available, had to dig deep for this fixture.
The commitment and determination of
the squad was evident from the kick off and this was rewarded with the
opening goal after 15 minutes, a tremendous strike from Ben Waters. This
opening goal saw the team's confidence grow and a second goal followed,
a headed effort by Ryan Forryan from a Ben Water's cross. The already
shuffled team then had more disruption as Ben was forced off with a
groin injury, to be replaced by Sam White. The reshuffle did not stop
the fluency of the performance and Ryan Forryan added a third goal with
a left footed shot from 20 yards.
The second half saw Markfield get
one back early on through some sloppy play by Stoke. Having seen a
chance to get back into the game a Markfield onslaught was
expected, however, Stoke re-grouped and from then on the result
was never in doubt, with few chances at either end.
After seeing off the first few
difficult weeks of the season, where availability has been a problem,
the Management team now look forward to two good weeks of training and
getting the full squad together and available to play.

A depleted Stoke Golding squad showed a lot of
character to leave Cosby with a hard earned point. An even first half
saw both teams create and miss chances and Stokes ranks were hindered
more when skipper Ryan Forryan suffered a thigh injury which saw him
bravely see out the game on virtually one leg but with no subs available
a change could not be made. Despite this Stoke continued to push in the
second half and were unfortunate not to score on a couple of occasions
but showed great determination especially in the last 5 minutes when a
few were running on empty.
After 3 games Stoke have
won 1 , lost 1, and drawn 1 but the promising sign is improvement has
been shown from game to game and we look forward to being able to select
from a full squad and see the improvement continue, well done boys.

Stoke progressed into the quarter finals of the County Cup with an
excellent victory over Harborough. The home side started well creating a
couple of half chance's early on only to concede against the run of
play. This seemed to knock the boys confidence and a second followed
shortly afterwards. At this point there was a look of concern on the
home supporters faces but the one thing this squad of players has shown
is a depth of character that comes to the fore when things are going
against them and they began to fight their way back into a game many
thought was lost.
Just before half time Jamie Coe surged on to a through ball and was
pulled down in the box. Lewis Hopewell stepped up to score the ensuing
penalty and the comeback had begun! The second half saw the boys
equalise early on from a tremendous angled strike by Peter Farmer,
suddenly the fans began to believe and five minutes later Peter Farmer
scored his second to put Stoke ahead for the first time.

ended goalless with few chances at either end. The second half started
much the same until the 52nd minute when a quickly taken freekick caught
the home side out and the deadlock was broken. Stoke now had to dig deep
as the visitors took a physical approach to defend their lead which led
to 6 yellow cards, but in spite of this for the second week running the
boys came back to win. The 80th minute saw the equaliser come from Jamie
Coe with a 30 yard strike into the bottom corner of the net. Stoke then

STOKE THROUGH TO SEMI
FINAL AFTER LATE LATE SHOW!
Stoke started well and dominated the early proceedings in this quarter
final tie. The central midfield pairing of Coe and Forryan bossed
their opposite numbers and the front two of Farmer and Lloyd gave
Markfield's back four a torrid time, so it was no surprise to all
regular spectators that Markfield took the lead against the run of play,
leaving the lads once more having to make a comeback.
This goal gave Markfield momentum and Alec Hill was twice forced to make
good saves to keep Stoke in the tie, but the boys rallied and Lewis
Hopewell latched on to a Ryan Forryan through ball and finished well ,
leaving the score at 1 - 1 at half time.
The second half started like the first and Stoke were enjoying total
domination causing Markfield all kinds of problems and their efforts
were rewarded when Jamie Coe lashed a superb strike into the top of the
net from a full thirty yards. The crowd were now looking for more and
really the standard of play being shown should have seen the boys home
easily but as time was running out the nerves started to show and with
just two minutes left, another wonder strike from Markfields full back
flew into the net and extra time beckoned.
Extra time was a nervy affair with nobody wanting to make the vital
mistake but Stoke were still creating chances and with just 31 seconds
left on the clock Coe played a through ball to Hopewell who looked up
and rolled a cross into the path of Josh Cheshire who side footed home.

a number of chances but were on the end of a few cynical and nasty
challenges from an opposition who clearly realised that, in footballing
qualities, they were outgunned. Continued pressure saw Pete Farmer
bought down in the box but unfortunately the resulting penalty struck
the post and bounced to safety. With frustration growing amongst the
lads a rash challenge led to Midland themselves being awarded with a
penalty which they converted. Half time came with the visitors somehow
finding themselves ahead.
Stoke improved again in the second half and stood up to their opponents
physical approach and on three occasions missed one on one chances,
before they finally got their deserved equaliser through Lewis Hopewell.
For the rest of the game Stoke pushed for the win but to no avail.
Frustrating, but after a 5 week break the rustiness showed through and
Stoke now can look forward to the rest of what has been a successful
season so far.

Stoke Golding
Stoke haved moved up to second in the Premier League with a bruising
away win at Huncote.
A second successive week where the boys have come up against a
physically intimidating side and stood up to the test with little
protection from the match official. The boys once again dug in early
against some atrocious challenges, which would have seen Nani rolling
over for five minutes, but showed that they are a group who will not
allow this kind of intimidation to affect them and slowly took control
of the match. By half time they had took total control with goals from
Pete Farmer, Josh Cheshire and Lewis Hopewell leaving them 3 up. The
second half saw the home side pull a goal back early giving them hope,
but the boys regained their composure and an excellent solo run and goal
from James Coe confirmed the three points.
Well done boys!
